A shoal of curious bumphead parrotfish (Bolbometopon muricatum) approach me out of curiosity. The largest of all the parrotfish growing up to 1.5 meters, these fish have been heavily exploited and are sought after by fishermen.
They usually shoal, making for an interesting sight as they travel across the reef chewing bits of coral into fine sand. Each fish eats up to five tons of coral per year. Bumphead parrotfish are important sediment makers on a reef eco-system.
