Flounder Close-up

marine life

Close-up of a flounder at the New England Aquarium in Boston, Massachusetts. This flatfish was born with an eye on each side of its head then one eye migrated to the other side of the body as the fish grows from larval to juvenile stage. As a result, the eyes are on the side which faces up when the fish camouflages itself by lying on the bottom of the ocean floor. This provides excellent protection against enemy predators.
