Peacock Mantis Shrimp

Odontodactylus scyllarus

A rainbow colored peacock mantis shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus), photographed while scuba diving in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The vast array of color is for mating purposes, colors are transmitted in wavelengths that can be detected by other mantis shrimp. They also use their florescent colors to send visual warming signals to predators in their habitat, hence the yellow and black oval fins above the claws.

Photo was shot with a Sony DSC-RX100M II Camera in a Nauticam housing with a INON S-2000 Strobe, a hand-mounted SOLA 2100 Video Light and a Sola P1200 red focus light.
