Spotted Gar

Spotted Gar

The primitive spotted gar (Lepisosteus oculatus), a fish that dates back to the Cretaceous period, some 65 to 100 million years ago. The ancestors of the spotted gar swam with the dinosaurs. An auxillary lung for surface breathing buoys up the gar’s heavily scaled body. It looks as peaceful as a floating log until it strikes like a flash at passing fish.
